Welcome to Fontenay-le-Comte, City of art and history, historic capital of southern Vendée and Welcome to Beaux Esprits
The guest house BEAUX ESPRITS is a mansion in stone which has been tastefully restored in order to preserve the historical heritage of the building. Lovers of architecture and the Renaissance period will be pleased to discover its remarkable elements such as the recently restored facade, and inside, original sculptures of Commedia Dell’Arte characters and the centrepiece of the the building, the winding stone staircase in one block ….
Our guest rooms are therefore among the most beautiful of Fontenay-le-Comte and in fact we are now open to the public for the French Heritage Days.
We can welcome you throughout the year in a warm, friendly environment in the centre of historic Fontenay-le-Comte, overlooking Baron Park yet close to shops and restaurants.
BEAUX ESPRITS is in Southern Vendée, at the gates of the Marais Poitevin, at 9 rue Goupilleau, Fontenay-le-Comte (85200)
History enthusiasts can visit the many monuments of the town of Fontenay as well as the museums, abbeys and castles of the Vendee. Families and history buffs can attend the spectacular pageants at Puy du Fou, while nature lovers will enjoy discovering the green gem of Vendée, the majestic Mervent forest, natural reserves of St Denis du Payré and La Baie de l’Aiguillon, and the beaches of its long coastline.
Caroline and Jean Daniel, the present owners, who originally come from the region of Lyon, fell in love with the house, the town and the region in the summer of 2013. To refurbish and decorate the rooms while reaching modern standards of comfort, it took fifteen months of painstaking restoration work in order to welcome you to this exceptional, historical house. We now believe that this residence has rediscovered its ambiance of yore, where family guests can take part in numerous receptions.
Yes indeed, we are in the area of the Renowned, close to the Four Tias Fountain where the emblematic motto of the town is written in Latin. François I described Fontenay as the “Fountain and sparkling source of Fine Minds”. Here was the noble part of the town where a number of scholars of the 16th century were born, where aristocratic families lived.
And so, quite naturally, the present owners/Caroline and Jean Daniel gave the name “ Beaux Exprits (“Fine Minds”) to their establishment. In addition to their main activities centred around their guest house and conference room renting, a wide variety of theme evenings are organised. An alternative venue to similar events in town, “Grands Esprits” is a place where topics related to culture, health, nature, art and literature are presented …. more often than not in an original, and even unexpected, way!
Caroline and Jean Daniel, who love old buildings and have great regard for the history of a locality, have researched the history of their home. They share what they know with all those who discover the house and give guided visits throughout the year and during the European Heritage Days in September.
Many different ways, open to everybody, to discover “Beaux Esprits”!
